The Votive Necklace

Throughout medieval Europe, small objects were left behind in abbeys, cathedrals, and roadside shrines as tangible records of hope, survival, grief, and remembrance. Cast in silver, carved from wax, or fashioned from precious metals, these offerings became part of an ever-growing archive of human longing. Long after the hands that placed them there had disappeared.

The Votive draws from this tradition of symbolic objects and the visual language of the Middle Ages. At its centre is Joan of Arc, whose brief life became inseparable from history and legend. Around her gathers a constellation of emblems borrowed from illuminated manuscripts, bestiaries, and medieval craftsmanship. Together they tell familiar stories of the medieval aesthetic

(P.S. A votive is an object offered in devotion, gratitude, or in fulfillment of a vow. In the Middle Ages, people would leave votive offerings at shrines or churches, often asking for protection, healing, or giving thanks for answered prayers.)
